Is 5 Days in Portugal Enough? 3 Short and Sweet Travel Itineraries

Are you planning a short trip to Portugal? This post covers three amazing 5 day Portugal itinerary ideas centered on Lisbon, Faro, and Porto.

Are you intrigued by Portugal but don't have a lot of time for a trip to Europe? I always say that a short trip is better than no trip at all. Portugal is definitely doable in a long weekend although it's even better savored on a one week or 10 day itinerary

I recommend centering your 5 day Portugal itinerary around one of Portugal's major airports in Lisbon, Porto, or Faro.

Let's explore some possible 5 day itineraries focused on Northern, Central, and Southern Portugal to help you make the most of a short and sweet European vacation.

Igreja de São João Baptista in Tomar, Portugal

Northern Portugal: Porto and Beyond

This 5-day itinerary centers on Porto in the North of Portugal.

Castelo do Queijo in Matosinhos, Portugal

Day 1: Arrive in Porto and head to Vila Nova de Gaia, just across the Douro River. Vila Nova de Gaia offers stunning views of Porto's Old Town and is home to renowned port houses. Consider staying at the luxurious Yeatman Hotel.

Day 2: Embark on a private guided wine tour of the Douro Valley, the birthplace of port wine. Visit vineyards like Casa do Romezal and Quinta da Pacheca, where you can learn about winemaking traditions, indulge in tastings, and soak in the region's beauty. This is the quintessential Porto day trip.

Day 3: Explore Porto's historic center, starting with a stroll along the Douro River. Take a Douro River Taxi for a different perspective of the city. Visit the WOW (World of Wine Experience) to further delve into the region's winemaking heritage.

✨ Deep dive on how to spend 3 days in Porto

Day 4: Take a day trip to Braga, Portugal's oldest city. Explore its well-preserved historical center and consider visiting the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, a pilgrimage site with a remarkable staircase. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Portuguese dinner at a local restaurant in Braga.

Day 5: Visit Guimarães, another historic town in Northern Portugal, featuring a well-preserved medieval castle. Afterwards, head to the Matosinhos municipality (close to the airport) for a taste of fresh seafood and a walk on the beach. Catch an evening flight from Porto Airport.

Central Portugal: A Blend of History, Culture, and Wine

In this 5 day Portugal itinerary, we'll explore some of Central Portugal's gems.

Convento de Cristo in Tomar, Portugal

Day 1: Arrive in Lisbon and take a drive to Coimbra, Portugal’s historic university city. Settle into your accommodation (We stayed in historic Hotel Quinta das Lágrimas) and spend the afternoon exploring Coimbra University, visiting its historic library. In the evening, enjoy a meal at a local taberna and soak in the city’s vibrant ambiance.

Day 2: Head to Aveiro, often called the "Venice of Portugal." Take a ride on a colorful moliceiro boat and admire the city's unique Art Nouveau architecture. Make sure to visit Costa Nova if you're into photography. The striped palheiros are striking!

Day 3: Embark on a day trip to Óbidos, a charming medieval town. Explore its well-preserved walls, visit Óbidos Castle, and enjoy the town's romantic atmosphere. Consider timing your visit with the annual Óbidos Chocolate Festival for a truly indulgent experience.

Day 4: Travel to Tomar, home to UNESCO World Heritage treasures like the Convent of Christ. Explore this historic town and learn about its connection to the Knights Templar. Consider dining al fresco at Canoa Wine Bar and enjoying the local atmosphere.

Day 5: Return to Lisbon. If you have time before your flight visit the National Tile Museum to learn about the history of azulejos. Enjoy a final dinner in Lisbon, perhaps at Time Out Market, one of my favorite food halls in Europe. Depart from Lisbon.

Southern Portugal: Sun, Sea, and Algarve Wines

Finally, let's head to the beach! This 5 days in Portugal itinerary centers on Faro Airport and the Algarve.

Pool and sea views at sunset from Tivoli Carvoeiro Hotel and Resort in the Algarve

Day 1: Arrive in Faro and rent a car at the airport to easily explore the Algarve region. I recommend basing yourself in Tivoli Carvoeiro Hotel and Resort. Take a hike around the limestone cliffs with spectacular views.

Day 2: Drive along the scenic Algarve coast, stopping at charming towns like Alvor, known for its boardwalk through sand dunes and birdwatching opportunities, and Portimão, where you can explore its beaches and the Mercado Municipal.

Continue your Algarve road trip, visiting the historic town of Lagos and admiring the Ponta da Piedade rock formations. Relax on the region’s stunning beaches and savor fresh seafood at a seaside restaurant.

Day 3-4: Drive to Tavira and check into Quinta do Caracol. Tavira is my favorite town in the Algarve and features amazing Portuguese doors that photographers are sure to love. Explore the town’s historic center, visit the Tavira Castle, and perhaps enjoy a meal at Restaurante Al-Far-Roba, known for its local cuisine. Don't forget to pick up a bottle of aguardente, a local liquor popular in the Algarve.

Day 5: Enjoy a relaxing morning in Faro, perhaps visiting the Faro Municipal Market or taking a boat trip to the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Be sure to check out the local bone chapel for a spine-chilling experience. Depart from Faro Airport.

As you can see, it's possible to cover a lot of ground in Portugal with just 5 days. Pick a region and focus your attention there for an efficient and fulfilling Portuguese trip.
