Want to experience a city that bridges two continents and is steeped in history? Istanbul is calling! I was fortunate to have the opportunity to spend three amazing days in November exploring this fascinating city.
It was a whirlwind of amazing sights, delicious food, and friendly cats. So, get ready to pack your bags and let's explore Istanbul together!
Day 1: Exploring Sultanahmet - Istanbul's Historic Heart
Let's start our Istanbul adventure in Sultanahmet, the city's historic heart. We stayed at the lovely Hotel Dersaadet, and were welcomed with a steaming cup of apple tea - a perfect start to our Turkish adventure.
After settling in, we took a walk to get our bearings. The Arasta Bazaar, with its whimsical felt hats, caught our eye, and we could see the magnificent Blue Mosque in the distance.
We wandered around the Blue Mosque, past rows of colorful houses, and reached the Hippodrome, an ancient square once used for chariot races! We even grabbed some delicious roasted chestnuts from a street vendor - a perfect evening snack.
Foodie Tip: For dinner, we highly recommend the Sultanahmet Fish House. We started with a yummy mezze of bread and spicy tomato dip, and then enjoyed white fish cooked with tomatoes, peppers, and cheese, served on a sizzling cast iron skillet.
Don't be surprised when your waiter brings you a moist towelette at the end of the meal - it's a hallmark of Turkish dining.
Take a stroll back to your hotel after dinner and admire the beautifully illuminated mosques, including the Sultan Ahmed (Blue) Mosque and the Hagia Sophia.
Day 2: Visiting Istanbul's Architectural Wonders
After waking up to the mesmerizing call to prayer from a nearby minaret, we started our day with a rooftop breakfast at our hotel, enjoying stunning views of the Sea of Marmara and the Blue Mosque. Feeling energized, we set off to explore Sultanahmet's architectural marvels.
Must-See Sights:
- Hippodrome: Revisit the Hippodrome during the day to see its iconic obelisk in all its glory.
- Basilica Cistern: Descend into this ancient underground cistern, marvel at its dramatic columns, and try to spot the sideways-facing and upside-down Medusas!
- Hagia Sophia: Explore this architectural masterpiece that has served as both a church and a mosque, admiring its magnificent dome, decorative plaques, and stunning mosaics.
- Blue Mosque: Immerse yourself in the beauty of this stunning mosque, known for its blue tiles, airy interior, and impressive domes.
Local Tip: Remember to remove your shoes and women must wear a headscarf before entering the mosques out of respect for those who worship there.
Lunch Break: After all that sightseeing, treat yourself to some delicious Turkish fast food. We highly recommend a döner kebab in lavash bread, paired with a refreshing cup of tea.
Keep an eye out for vendors selling free squeezed pomegranate juice. That was the highlight of this November trip to Istanbul for me!
Afternoon Delights:
- Grand Bazaar Area: Take a walk around the Grand Bazaar area. We visited on a Sunday even though it was closed. It's a great opportunity to explore the neighborhood without the usual hustle and bustle.
- Süleymaniye Mosque: Climb up to this impressive mosque and enjoy the stunning views of the Bosphorus.
- Spice Market: Immerse yourself in the vibrant Spice Market, where you can find everything from colorful spices and dried fruits to delicious Turkish delight.
Foodie Tip: After your spice shopping spree, indulge your sweet tooth at Hafiz Mustafa, a famous sweet shop nearby. We recommend trying the fig pudding with pistachio garnish, paired with a traditional Turkish coffee.
Evening Stroll: As the sun sets, head to Galata Bridge and watch the countless fishermen casting their lines into the Bosphorus. Walk across the bridge and enjoy the beautiful views, while waiting to catch a glimpse of someone reeling in a fish.
Day 3: The Bosphorus and Taksim Square
Get ready for a day filled with scenic beauty and vibrant city life. We started our day early with a walk through the Arasta Bazaar. Then, we headed to Galata Bridge for our ferry cruise up the Bosphorus.
Bosphorus Cruise Highlights:
- Scenic Beauty: Enjoy breathtaking views of iconic mosques, historic palaces, and charming waterfront homes.
- Jellyfish Encounter: Keep an eye out for thousands of jellyfish floating in the water - a truly mesmerizing sight.
- Kanlica Yogurt: Make sure to grab some yogurt when the boat stops at Kanlıca ferry terminal. This famous fresh natural yogurt is served with powdered sugar - so good!
- Sunset Views: As you cruise back to Istanbul at dusk, be prepared for stunning sunset views, with the silhouette of the city in the background.
Evening in Taksim Square: After disembarking the ferry, take the funicular from Kabataş to Taksim Square, a bustling hub of activity. Stroll along Istiklal Caddesi, enjoy a dainty cup of Turkish coffee from a street vendor, and have a delicious dinner at one of the many restaurants lining the street.
