Why Seville is the Perfect Christmas Destination

Experience the magic of Seville at Christmas. Discover festive traditions, delicious food, seasonal things to do on your December trip to Spain.

Want to escape the winter blues and experience Christmas with a Spanish twist? Consider planning a trip to Seville like we did. Seville is an ideal Christmas destination, and I'm here to tell you why...

Sunny Skies and Pleasant Weather

Let's be real, who wants a freezing Christmas? One of the best things about Seville in December is the amazing weather. The average daily temperature in Seville in December is around 12 °C (54 °F).

You can ditch the heavy coats and enjoy sunny days with comfortable temperatures – perfect for exploring all the incredible sights in Andalusia.

I remember visiting Seville in June and practically melting in the heat. I found that December offers a much more pleasant experience.

Festive Atmosphere and Dazzling Lights

Seville truly embraces the Christmas spirit. Explore spectacular light displays all over the city.

During the day, they sparkle in the sunshine, and at night, they create a magical, festive glow. You might even stumble upon some live music in Plaza del Salvador, adding to the lively atmosphere.

Unique Christmas Experiences

Here are a few things that make Seville's Christmas celebrations truly special.

Larger-than-Life Nativity Scenes

Did you know Seville is famous for its incredible Nativity scenes? Some are so big you can actually walk through them. You might have to wait in line, but these impressive displays are worth the wait.

Churros con Chocolate Indulgence

When it's a little chilly out, nothing beats a warm cup of thick, rich chocolate with crispy, sugary churros. It's my favorite Spanish treat.

Bar El Comercio, with its charming old-world atmosphere, is the perfect spot to enjoy this delicious indulgence. While you can indulge in churros year round, I find them to be the perfect Christmas treat.

Must-See Sights and Attractions

Seville is packed with incredible things to see and do, especially at Christmastime!

Flamenco Magic at the Museum

No trip to Seville is complete without experiencing a passionate flamenco performance. I recommend the Flamenco Museum, housed in a beautiful 18th-century building.

Before the show, explore the museum's fascinating collection of artifacts and artwork dedicated to this iconic Spanish dance.

Then, get ready to swept away by the artistry and passion of the dancers as they stomp and clap their way across the stage while accompanied by beautiful music on the flamenco guitar.

Royal Splendor at the Real Alcazar

You could easily spend an entire day exploring the Real Alcazar, a magnificent Royal Palace with a rich history. It's built on the site of a 10th-century Islamic citadel and has been expanded and embellished over the centuries.

Grounds of the Real Alcazar de Sevilla

I highly recommend the self-guided tour with an audio guide (about €34 at the time of writing). And here's a pro tip: book in advance for a guided tour of the Royal Apartments – it's a must-see.

You'll have to see for yourself though since there are no photos allowed in the Royal Apartments. Visitors are required to check their bags and phones in lockers before joining the tour.

However, the broader grounds of the Alcazar are a photographer's dream, with stunning marble floors, colorful tiles, intricate door patterns, fragrant citrus trees, beautiful tiled fountains, and even peacocks strutting through the gardens!

Explore Macarena

You haven't truly experienced the city's soul until you've crossed the river and wandered through Macarena. This neighborhood is a kaleidoscope of color, with gorgeous tiles adorning practically every surface – and did you know that a lot of those tiles were actually made right here in the neighborhood?

It's like a living museum!

Just get lost in the maze of narrow streets and let your curiosity be your guide. You'll stumble upon hidden courtyards, charming shops, and maybe even a tile-making workshop.

Eventually, you'll want to make your way towards Alameda de Hércules, a lively plaza that's buzzing with restaurants and bars. We loved Lola por Dios Alameda – a small, but super-popular spot with incredible patterned tiles that make you feel like you're dining inside a work of art.

Grab a table, order some tapas, and soak up the authentic Macarena vibes.

Climb Torre de Oro

This 13th-century military watchtower stands guard over the river and offers fantastic views of the city. Climb to the top for a unique perspective on Seville – you'll see everything from historic buildings to modern skyscrapers.

Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla

This fine art museum is housed in a gorgeous 17th-century palace and features an impressive collection of religious-themed works, along with some stunning ceilings and courtyards.

Eat Your Way Through Setas de Sevilla

This iconic wooden sculpture is hard to miss! It's not just a cool piece of art, though – it also houses a food market where you can browse stalls overflowing with fresh produce, sample local snacks, and enjoy a glass of wine or two. It's a great place to get a taste of Seville's culinary scene.

Explore Archive General de Indias

If you are fascinated by the history of the Age of Exploration, the Archive General de Indias is worth a visit. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a historical archive with an incredible library. Just imagine the stories those ancient tomes could tell!

Plaza de España

This iconic plaza is one of the most photo-worthy spots in Seville – and for good reason! It's absolutely breathtaking, with its ornate bridges, colorful tile work, and grand architecture. You'll find plaques representing all the major regions of Spain.

Plus, visiting during December means you'll likely avoid the massive tourist crowds that flock here during peak season.

Pro-tip: Plaza de España was the main pavillion of the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition. Start at the Colombian consulate featuring fabulous pastiche architecture and wander the green spaces past Plaza de América until you finally arrive at Plaza de España, about a 15 minute walk.

Christmas Day Adventures

Did you know many businesses in Seville are closed on Christmas Day? Don't worry, I think this actually presents a fantastic opportunity.

You can enjoy a peaceful photo walk without the usual crowds. Imagine capturing the beauty of Seville's architecture bathed in golden sunlight and strolling along the tranquil river.

Excursions from Seville

We spent over a week in Seville for our Christmas break which gave us time to explore what the surrounding region has to offer. Rent a car and embark on some fascinating historically focused day trips and overnight excursions. Let's step back in time.

Day Trip to Itálica

Just a short 20-minute drive from Seville, you'll find Itálica, a remarkably well-preserved Roman city. I was blown away by the intricate mosaic tile floors - some featuring detailed portraits of animals and birds. And the Roman theater is a must-see!

Journey to Córdoba

Córdoba is another amazing city, about an hour and a half drive (or a quick 45-minute train ride) from Seville. It's famous for the Mezquita-Cathedral, a unique building that has been both a Christian cathedral and a mosque over the centuries. I recommend spending at least 24 hours in Córdoba to see all the sights.

Striped arches inside Mezquita-Cathedral in Córdoba

You can see architectural elements from both periods, making it a truly fascinating place to explore. I recommend booking a ticket to climb the bell tower for breathtaking panoramic views of the city.

We did the last tour of the day, and the golden light bathing the buildings below was simply magical in December.

Stop in Carmona

If you're driving to Córdoba, why not break up the journey with a stop in Carmona? It's just 30 minutes from Seville and is known for its Roman ruins.

Janky ladder leading into the Roman Ruins at Carmona

You can explore the Roman Necropolis and even climb down into one of the ancient crypts via a rather janky ladder (something you'd never be allowed to do in the U.S.!). Carmona is also a charming town to wander around, with a beautiful Alcazar and stunning views from the historic city walls.
