This amazing country truly comes alive during the holiday season, offering a magical blend of festive cheer, stunning scenery, and rich cultural traditions.
Want to know how to experience the best of Austria's Christmas magic in just one week? Let's dive into a fantastic itinerary that'll leave you feeling merry and bright!
Day 1-2: Innsbruck - Alpine Charm and Christmas Delights
Our journey kicks off in Innsbruck, a picture-perfect city nestled in the heart of the Tyrolean Alps. You can fly directly into Innsbruck Airport, or if you're already exploring Europe, hop on a train from Munich for a scenic ride through the mountains.
Here’s how to spend your first three days in Innsbruck:
Get lost in the Innsbruck Christmas Markets
Innsbruck is home to several traditional Christmas markets, each with its own unique character. Stroll along the market on Maria-Theresien-strasse, or head to the market along the River Inn, where you'll be greeted by a stunning Swarovski Crystal Christmas tree!
Don't forget to warm up with a mug of glühwein and indulge in some delicious treats, like flammkuchen, a savory wood-fired flatbread.
Ascend to Nordkette for Breathtaking Views
For an unforgettable experience, take the funicular and cable car up to Nordkette, Innsbruck's mountain playground. You'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the city and surrounding Alps.
You can even hike to the summit of Hafelekar, but be warned - it's a steep climb! If you’re feeling brave, you could ski down the slopes. I'm not a skier so I preferred admiring the views from a cozy spot with a hot drink.
Meet the Alpine Animals at Alpenzoo
This unique alpine zoo showcases a variety of animals that call the Alps home. You'll encounter everything from playful goats to majestic eagles and even a few brown bears. The zoo is located on a mountainside, so be prepared for a bit of uphill walking, but the views are worth every step.
Step into a Winter Wonderland at Swarovski Crystal Worlds
No trip to Innsbruck is complete without a visit to Swarovski Crystal Worlds, a dazzling exhibition of crystal art and design. You can reach it by bus from Innsbruck's main train station. We loved the mesmerizing Chamber of Wonders, and the stunning art installations. Keep an eye out for Christmas decorations made entirely of sparkling Swarovski crystal.
Travel Tip: Consider purchasing an Innsbruck Card, which offers free admission to many attractions, including those mentioned above, as well as free public transportation. It can save you a lot of money and make getting around a breeze.
✨ Deep dive on things to do in Innsbruck at Christmastime.
Day 3: Day Trip to Seefeld - Cross-Country Skiing and Festive Cheer
Today, let's take a scenic train ride from Innsbruck to Seefeld, a charming village about 40 minutes away. Seefeld is known for its cross-country skiing trails, making it the perfect place to embrace winter sports.
Here's what you can do in Seefeld:
Try Cross-Country Skiing
Even if you've never skied before, don't worry! Local ski schools offer beginner-friendly lessons. You'll be gliding through the snow-covered landscape in no time.
Enjoy Apres-Ski Delights
After a day on the trails, warm up at a cozy cafe with a steaming cup of coffee and a slice of topfenstrudel.
Explore the Seefeld Christmas Market
Seefeld also has its own festive Christmas market, where you can enjoy glühwein by the fire and browse for unique gifts and souvenirs. Bonus points for adding a shot of Amaretto to your glühwein for an extra warming kick.
Travel Tip: To reach the skiing area in Mösern, take a short taxi ride from the Seefeld train station. It costs around 14 EUR.
Day 4-5: Salzburg - Mozart, The Sound of Music, and Festive Charm
Next, we'll hop on a train and journey to Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and the setting for the beloved movie The Sound of Music!
Here's how to make the most of your time in Salzburg:
See Salzburg from Above at Fortress Hohensalzburg
This majestic fortress perched on a hilltop offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city, the Salzach River, and the surrounding mountains. Take the funicular up, explore the fortress walls, and visit the state apartments for a glimpse into Salzburg's royal past.
Step Back in Time in Salzburg's Old Town
Salzburg's historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it's full of charm and history. Stroll through the pedestrianized streets, admire the beautiful baroque architecture, and soak in the festive atmosphere.
Experience the Sound of Music
If you're a fan of the movie, Salzburg is a must-visit! Explore Sound of Music World, a museum dedicated to the Trapp Family singers.
Indulge in Mozartkugeln
These delicious marzipan-filled chocolate balls are a Salzburg specialty. Visit Fürst Cafe, the home of the original Mozartkugeln, for an authentic taste. Don’t forget to buy a few extra as souvenirs – they make perfect gifts for friends and family!
Experience the Magic of Schloss Hellbrunn
This 17th-century palace is home to a beautiful Christmas market during the holiday season. While you’re there, keep an eye out for Krampus – a terrifying horned creature who’s part of Austrian folklore!
Travel Tip: Consider purchasing a Salzburg Card, which offers free admission to many attractions, including the fortress, museums, and public transportation.
✨ Make the most of 24 hours in Salzburg at Christmastime.
Days 6-7: Vienna - Imperial Grandeur and New Year's Eve Celebrations
For our final stop, let's take a train to Vienna, Austria's elegant capital city. Vienna is a city of grand palaces, world-renowned museums, and charming cafes.
Here's how to spend your last days in Austria:
Explore Vienna's Grand Architecture
Visit St. Stephen's Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture; the Hofburg Palace, the former winter residence of the Habsburg emperors; and the Schönbrunn Palace, a stunning baroque palace with beautiful gardens.
Embrace Viennese Cafe Culture
No trip to Vienna is complete without a visit to a traditional Viennese cafe. Some of my favorites include Cafe Central, Cafe Demel, and Cafe Sacher. Treat yourself to a melange (a Viennese coffee specialty), a slice of Sachertorte, and some apfelstrudel.
Get Lost in the Christmas Markets
Vienna is home to some of the most enchanting Christmas markets in Europe! The Rathaus Weihnachtsmarkt, in front of Vienna's City Hall, is a must-see, with its towering Christmas tree and festive lights. You'll also find charming markets at Schönbrunn Palace and Spittelberg.
Ring in the New Year on the Silvesterpfad
If you happen to be in Vienna for New Year's Eve, join the massive street party known as the Silvesterpfad! You’ll find live music, food stalls, fireworks, and plenty of people doing the Viennese Waltz along the streets of Vienna’s city center.
