So, you like castles, I see... That means your ideal destination in Europe is the UK!
Steeped in history, dramatic landscapes, and architectural marvels, Great Britain and Northern Ireland boast a wealth of castles. Each one whispers tales of jousting knights, royal intrigue, and battles won and lost.
Edinburgh Castle is one of my favorites. Perched high on a volcanic rock in Scotland, today the castle is home to the Military Tattoo, one of the coolest things to do in Edinburgh in the summer.
Contrast this with the majesty of Buckingham Palace, the royal residence in London. Make sure to head next door to St. James Park where you can see the royal bird collection.
Venture further afield in the UK and explore imposing Conwy Castle on a North Wales train trip. Did you know that Conwy is a UNESCO World Heritage Site? Alternatively, head to Belfast Castle nestled amidst the lush greenery of Northern Ireland's Cave Hill Country Park.
History buffs won't want to miss Rochester Castle in Kent, a Norman masterpiece guarding the River Medway. Rochester is an ideal whistle-stop on a weekend trip to Canterbury from London.
Those seeking castles in a truly dramatic setting (and maybe a deep-fried Mars bar) should head to Dunnottar Castle near Aberdeen, its windswept clifftop location overlooking the North Sea a sight to behold.
